The city of Salida, the county seat of Chaffee County, was originally established in 1880, as a railroad town. It served as an important link in the Rio Grande and Denver Railroad, but the railroad began to pull back its operations in the community after World War II. Between the 1950s and 1970s, most of Salida’s residents worked at the Climax Molybdenum Company, which required commuting north to Leadville. The area is home to the FIBArk kayak race, which takes place annually, and is one of North America’s most prestigious and oldest whitewater races. The city derives its name from a Spanish term, which means ‘exit’.
